In a pivotal moment reminiscent of past political battles, Rupert Murdoch’s Sun famously claimed responsibility for John Major’s surprising victory in the General Election of 1992, with the bold headline “It’s The Sun Wot Won It.” The paper had relentlessly targeted Labour leader Neil Kinnock, including a memorable front page that warned, “If Kinnock wins today will the last person to leave Britain please turn out the lights,” depicting Kinnock inside a lightbulb.
Fast forward to today, and the same tabloid, though now wielding less influence, has chosen to abandon the Conservative Party and throw its support behind Keir Starmer and Labour. Some might view this as a sign of the Conservatives’ diminishing prospects.
Unusually, most newspapers this election day are united in their support for Labour, a scenario not seen since Tony Blair’s victory in 1997. The exception is the Daily Mail, which remains loyal to Rishi Sunak’s Conservatives.
